FutureFuel Chemical Company is seeking a Development Lab Bench Chemist for our Chemical Technology Department.  The Development Lab Bench Chemist works under the direction of an Advanced Scientist, typically a PhD Chemist.  The Development Lab Bench Chemist assists in the development of new organic chemical synthesis manufacturing processes and the improvement of existing manufacturing processes.  The Development Lab Bench Chemist would also support the resolution of manufacturing issues and product quality issues and provide technical assistance to customers.

They aid in planning and conducting laboratory projects and investigations of a research or development nature.  They assemble laboratory equipment, perform experiments, observe and record details of experimental work, and document the results in memos, reports, and other technical methods.  They perform minor maintenance on laboratory equipment and design and order the necessary supplies and parts to conduct chemical synthesis experiments.  They interface with outside customers and internal peers.  They use a variety of highly technical laboratory equipment to perform research and development type experiments (i.e., automated reactor systems and data acquisition.)  They must consider safety and environmental conditions as well as effectiveness and efficiency when designing and conducting experiments.  Candidates must be strong in initiative and self-direction and committed to follow-through.  Candidates with a B.S. in Chemistry and previous experience are preferred.  Candidates with a B.A. in Chemistry or other related degrees will be considered depending on their course completions and experience.

From a current Principal Development Chemist:

As a chemist, I enjoy the challenge of evaluating and improving chemical processes from lab scale through implementation in plant manufacture. I have been privileged to work on a wide variety of projects and processes involving different types of organic synthetic chemistry and process techniques. I have experience in sulfonations, chlorinations (chlorine, thionyl chloride, PCl3/POCl3), diazotization, oximations, substitution reactions, condensation reactions, etc. I also have experience in polymerization, primarily with acrylates and free radical polymerization, but also in Friedel-Crafts polymer reactions. Although reaction conditions are important, work-up and isolation techniques often determine whether a process will be successful in the plant. The process must be taken as a whole, and here is where experience and creativity bring the most value.  I have also been privileged to work with a host of customers, particularly on technical issues related to process chemistry and manufacturing start-ups. I strive to develop strong relationships with project/process groups through teamwork, both internally and externally.”

FutureFuel Chemical Company is looking for a new member for its Information Technology Team to specialize in database development and deployment.  The ideal candidate would be a creative IT professional with experience in business intelligence, analysis, and the ability to develop workable solutions to information needs.

The candidate selected for this job will initially focus on optimizing data systems in the Health, Safety, Environment, and Security (HSES) Department and will transition over time to a position in the plant wide Information Technology (IT) Department.  While working in the HSES Department, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to train with other “in the fence” departments and become familiar with numerous FutureFuel job roles.

HSES programs touch every department and every person working at or visiting FutureFuel.  While working as the HSES Database Analyst, the selected candidate will gather and organize information from across the plant, validate data accuracy, generate data files for numerous government agency reports, and store information in an easily accessible format.  The HSES Department presently uses over 60 databases and information banks that have been developed by various people over many years.  Many are inefficient and difficult to use. These databases need to be evaluated for redundancy, combined and automated wherever possible, and reports should be formatted to meet internal and external customer needs.  Government agencies cross-check data entered into Central Data Exchange (CDX) databases and flag data discrepancies; therefore, it is critical that data submitted by various HSES areas is both consistent and accurate.

The HSES Database Analyst will work closely with FutureFuel’s IT and Process Control Departments to ensure HSES data systems work in concert with plant-wide computer systems.  As internal HSES data systems are improved, more time will be devoted to learning about plant wide data systems and working with the IT Department.  The transition time from HSES to IT will be contingent upon the size of the HSES work backlog.
